At the end of the war Minsk was in ruins, so the restoration works to improve the appearance of the city began immediately after the war was finished. One of the first buildings constructed at that time was the building of the KGB, which, according to the architects and designers, was supposed to set the overall tone of the architecture of the newly built postwar world.
Initially, the silhouette of the hotel building that survived the revolution was taken as a basis for the architectural ensemble. The building was supposed to be skilfully and harmoniously incorporated into the ensemble in a neoclassical style. The construction of the building had been completed by the end of 1947.
The final result was quite impressive and monumental. The wall cladding made with forged granite, the plaster mixed with marble chips –– all of the above made the KGB building very impressive. However, the main thing is that it fits Minsk harmoniously, because its appearance is more like a theatre rather than the building reserved for law enforcement agencies. Today the KGB building is completely given to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and inside of it a Museum of the Ministry is located.
How to get there: KGB building is located at Nezavisimosti Avenue, 17, which is close to the metro ‘Oktyabrskaya’.
